In this volume, the complete short-fiction of Jesús Gardea unfolds. Voices born of the flat, parched plains of northern Mexico, amid white heat and horizons that stretch beyond sight. Here, characters inhabit solitary houses, forsaken places; they perform tiny yet fateful acts: a man rowing a dresser, another clearing unwanted land, a dream turning into escape or death.
Each story is carved in a lean but deeply melancholic style; the language holds back the superfluous and lets words like “wind”, “rain”, “horizon” stand raw, while life persists, battles, quietly.
An essential read for those drawn to a literature unafraid of absence, that explores what lies unseen and makes it pulse with quiet significance.
Original text with facing translation.

Jesús Gardea (born July 2, 1939 in Delicias, Chihuahua - died March 12, 2000 in Mexico City) was a Mexican writer best known for his short-fiction set against the plains and towns of northern Mexico. Trained as a dentist, Gardea worked in that profession for many years before publishing his first book after the age of forty.
His prose is marked by sparse, measured language and a persistent concern with marginal places, quiet characters and deep horizons. Gardea has come to be regarded as one of the most important voices in late 20th-century Mexican literature.
